As a 100% distributed company, we know a thing or two about the benefits of the digital nomad lifestyle and have been at the forefront to witness the growth of the digital nomad phenomenon and evolution of its demographics’ maturity, for a lack of better terms.
The Digital Nomad lifestyle sounds almost too good to be true. No attachments and the freedom to live, earn, and play exactly how you choose is the very definition of freedom – but if that doesn't sound like you, don’t worry remote work isn’t just for traveling adventuring singles. Families are now taking full advantage of the remote worker lifestyle and at Upstack we have employees that fall in both categories.

Wikipedia defines digital nomads as people who use wireless internet, smartphones, Voice over IP, and cloud-based applications to work remotely wherever they live or travel. And that is absolutely accurate. This lifestyle is perfect for developers, entrepreneurs, and content creators who wish to be able to travel at the drop of a dime, keep overheads low, and prefer not to stay in one spot too long. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll see some of the amazing “offices” our people work from which quite frequently include a view of a beautiful body of water (coding by a waterfall anyone?). While this life is awesome, it may not be right for everybody – especially for those with a family or who prefer a “home base” for several reasons. The next category is for you.
Location Independent

Upstack COO, George Cretu enjoying family time
Our CEO and founder Yossi Mlynsky and I fall into this category, along with a number of Upstack developers. So what’s the difference? People who are location independent are exactly what it sounds like – they can choose their home base to be anywhere and can choose to change that anytime because their income is not tied to a location. So it’s like the best of both worlds – freedom with the advantages that having a home base provides, like being able to become a real part of a community and giving your kids stability and access to great schools. The digital nomad lifestyle usually turns into a location-independent one as income increases and priorities shift.
Our point really is that remote working can be for everyone no matter what your goals are or where you are in your life journey. In fact, we believe that one day, a majority of the global population will be remote workers, whether you're a python developer or a WordPress developer – we’re just early adopters. A Gallup poll published early this year called “State of the American Workplace” found that 43% of employed Americans worked remotely last year at least part-time. It also found that both the length of time working remotely and the number of employees doing so full time has been growing every year (up 39% from 2012). So what are you waiting for – if you think this lifestyle could be for you, check out our open opportunities, here.
