Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Lead RPA Developer
2020 - 2022 (2 years)
Remote
Supervised the development of 15+ new projects that resulted in savings of £800,000+.
Acted as technical lead and advisor for the conception and expansion of the Robotics Centre of Excellence.
Expanded the service to leverage Microsoft Power Platform tools: Power Automate (Cloud Flows and Power Automate Desktop), Power BI, AI Builder, Dataverse, and Power Virtual Agents (chatbots).
Led a scrum team as the scrum master and lead developer for two major projects. Automated the processing of requests by interpreting data on the scanned input form and integrated the robot with the internal BPM tool.
Contributed to the overall governance strategy for the whole group. Some Scrum ceremony methodologies and documentation used in the scrum were used as examples by the governance manager and set as the standard for intelligent automation.
Integrated multiple applications with the RPA platform (Java, web, legacy, API, and SOAP).
Completed a project for a public body's finance department using UiPath. The robot was designed to read and reconcile invoices from PDF documents with system-generated banking data in spreadsheet format.
Set up standard templates for documentation for all future projects and agreed on development standards with management and the development team.
Worked with the pre-sales teams on POC and developed demos for clients.
Led the formation of the automation academy to train internal resources and assisted in the recruitment process by conducting interviews and designing the RPA exercise used on the assessment day.
Most processes being automated in the department involved interaction with the mainframe system. The RPA robot was initially integrated using surface automation. This proved unreliable as sometimes the data on the screen would shift.I built a component object that uses Blue Prism's native ability to integrate with mainframe applications. Using code stages, I create basic functions like reading the data by getting the text and sending commands using the mainframe's native language. This improved an already fast process to achieve a 50% faster speed. It was so fast that throttling was needed to avoid overwhelming the mainframe servers due to the number of transactions being processed every second. Once the object was built, a major migration project took place to replace the surface automation object linked to all 30+ processed and instead link to the new component object I built.
After joining Fujitsu, I was invited to participate in the pre-sales meeting for an RPA project as the RPA expert. After reviewing the documentation sent by the client for the project they wanted to automate, I built a POC and brought this to the pre-sales meeting.I explained how UiPath and RPA technology works and demonstrated a process that the logistics client was familiar with, which enabled the sales process to move further.
While working for Next, a limited number of licenses were available for the Blue Prism/Thoughtonomy platform. Only one environment was used for development, testing, and production, which was not ideal, especially when this had to be shared between five developers. To maximize half of the robot workforce's usage, I built a utility process that, with the use of environmental locks, enables conflicting scheduled processes to wait for the running process to finish before attempting to run on the robot. If this utility was not present, scheduling processes precisely to run them seamlessly was necessary. Due to this workaround, management could postpone purchasing additional costly licenses until they achieve some ROI from RPA.
