Blog: SQL Server 2016 Always Encrypted
  • Transactional data, which holds crucial business information, is most vulnerable when in transit between the server and client. The traditional method of securing this data involves encrypting it on the server and using the SSL-enabled HTTPS protocol.

  • A more secure approach is to send data in an encrypted format over the communication line, which can then be decrypted only by clients possessing valid certificates, making man-in-the-middle attacks much more challenging.

  • Microsoft's solution to this issue is Always Encrypted, which allows encrypted data to be sent over the pipeline and decrypted only by clients with valid certificates. This article provides guidance on setting up and using Always Encrypted.
